"Makebate"

Note: From X post:

Prepping to teach midweek Bible study yesterday on the 18 items in Paul's vice list in 2 Timothy 3:2-4, which, he says, will be prevalent among men in these "perilous times" of the "last days" (v. 1), and was struck by the alternate translation suggested in the KJV margin for "false accusers [διαβολοι]" in v. 3.

The suggestion is "makebates." An online dictionary defines a "makebate" as "one that excites contention and quarrels." It describes the term as "archaic" and notes its first known use as 1529.

It is pronounced as one one might expect a compound word to go: "make" plus "bate," long "a"s and silent "e"s. This is another word we need to make great again and not let slip out of usage. I pledge to start using it in sentences like this:
"The internet troll made himself a makebate in the comments section."

This Day In Church History: The "White-Ehrman" Joint Appearance (January 21, 2009)

I received this note today from my friend Felix Doulos, a sometimes contributor to the blog, and thought I would pass it on to my readers:

This day in Church History: Thirteen years ago today, January 21, 2009, popular internet apologist James White participated in a joint appearance ("debate") with UNC professor and NT textual criticism expert Bart Ehrman in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The topic of discussion: “Does the Bible Misquote Jesus?”

Since taking place, it has become one of the most talked about events in the subculture of evangelical internet apologetics, discussed frequently on internet programs (like the Dividing Line) and often put forward (by James White) as a hallmark example of how to do apologetics in the “real world.” Financial terms of the joint appearance, including how much Ehrman was paid to take part, have never been publicly disclosed. Whatever the price, it was well worth it.

Though White has continued to talk often, if not incessantly, of the joint appearance over the past thirteen years, Ehrman has been more reticent. When he posted videos of the debate to his blog in 2014 he wrote: “I wasn’t sure whether I should post this debate or not. Frankly, it was not a good experience. I normally do not have an aversion to the people I debate. But James White is that kind of fundamentalist who gets under my skin.

There are many ways in which “White-Ehrman Day” may be commemorated. One might watch the event again on video and ponder the vast agreement between the two panelists on textual variants in the NT, or one might look for those lighthearted moments, as when Ehrman playfully corrected White’s pronunciation of renowned German textual critic “Kurt Aland.”

As we have recently been reminded with respect to the commemoration of events like January 6, 2021, these kinds of significant moments deserve to be remembered (and mentioned again, and again).

Two Views of the Transmission of the Bible: A Farmer's Perspective

Here is a meme shared by my friend Poul de Gier, RB Pastor at Grace Fellowship Church, Pononka, Alberta Canada. In addition to his work as a pastor, Poul is also a farmer, so he knows something about baling twine.

Idea for a Video Cover of "Imagine"

The other day I was driving along and the John Lennon song “Imagine” came on the air. This is one of the my all-time least favorite pop songs. This anti-religion rant is one of the most self-righteous, hateful and hypocritical of all time, as it indiscriminately bashes all religious belief in the supposed name of tolerance.

The thought came to my mind that I’d like to see someone make a cover video of the song. As the music begins, I see the camera focusing in on a group of swaying figures come together for a “We Are the World”-esque rendition of the number. Among the figures are Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot, Adolf Hitler, Fidel Castro, and Hugo Chavez. They form the chorus as various singers step to the mic for their solos:

Stalin:
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try

Pol Pot:
No hell below us
Above us only sky

Chorus:
Imagine all the people living for today

Hitler:
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do

Lenin:
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

Chorus:
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you

Stalin:
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one

Castro:
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Mao:
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can

Chavez:
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

Chorus:
Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you

Chorus:

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope some day you'll join us

And the world will be as one

We will not have a Good Friday service this evening

At the risk of tumbling down the slope into the slough of self-righteousness and rigid judgmentalism.  No.  We did not hold an Ash Wednesday service to mark the beginning of Lent. We are not giving up anything for Lent.  We did not observe Palm Sunday last Lord’s Day.  We did not have a Maundy Thursday service last night and will not have a Good Friday service this evening.

At some point, in broad evangelical churches, I think I have taken part in all of the above (except maybe for smearing ashes on the forehead—but I know a few moderate “liturgical” ancient-future churches who have done and do this too).

What spoiled all this for me?  The regulative principle of worship.  The discovery of the abiding validity of the fourth commandment.  The realization that embracing Reformed theology is not merely a matter of holding to TULIP.  Coming to understand my own sinful tendency to go beyond what is written.  To jazz things up to make it more interesting.  Add some smells and bells.  Some tangible experience, beyond the simplicity of one day in seven for rest and uncluttered worship.

There is something better.  Simpler.  No extra ingredients needed.

Stephen Altrogge: If All The Bible Translations Had A Dinner Party

Note:  This conversation comes from this post by Stephen Altrogge on the Blazing Center blog, and I came across it here.
English Standard Version (ESV): Hey everybody, can I have your attention? Great, thanks. Look, I’m so glad that you’re all here for this reunion of sorts. It sure is great to have all of us translations together in one…
New International Version (NIV): Since when did you become the big cheese who gets to tell us what to do? Look, I know you’re the new kid on the block, and that a bunch of pastors are all like, “Rah, rah, ESV, our study Bible can beat up your study Bible.” But just because you’re new and polished doesn’t mean you’re better. Some of us have been around for a long time and have seen a lot of things.
King James Version (KJV): Hear, hear! Thou young Bibles have no sense of tradition or languages. Thou goest hither and yon, getting makeovers every three years.  NIV, in the last ten years thou hast gotten plastic surgery and thou hast begun dressing like a metrosexual. Thou hast lost thy manhood! I haven’t changed one jot or tittle in over 400 years! [Takes small sip of merlot from a goblet marked “Ebenezer”].
NIV: I am not dressing like a metrosexual! These are skinny jeans. They’re supposed to look…skinny. And in terms of my manhood, let me make something…
The Message (MSG): Dudes, why does Old Man James always talk like that? [Slurps on Redbull]. I mean, like, what’s the difference between “Thee” and “Thou”? And what are jots and tittles? Are they like “Mike & Ike’s”? Honestly, I feel like I’m talking to someone who speaks Mexican. Whatev’s. I totes don’t get it.
ESV: Okay, okay, listen. Yes, I have been getting a lot of attention lately, and I did have a snazzy marketing campaign, but that doesn’t mean I’m bet…
MSG: Dude, can you talk a little quieter. My son, The Message Remix, is competing in the X-Games, and I’m trying to watch on my phone. He’s totes shredding the half-pipe.
Amplified Bible (AMP) [nervously rubbing hands together, perspiration forming on mustache]: I just want to say that I’m really grateful, excited, thrilled, jazzed, stoked to be here. I talk a lot, say a lot of words, run my mouth when I get nervous, anxious, stressed, worried, so please ignore, deny, pay no attention to me. Did I say too much?
KJV [speaking very loudly]: Translations these days have no sense of history, no sense of tradition. I wast commissioned by King James himself. I am practically royalty. Back in my day, there was no New Living Message Voice Remix. There were no glow in the dark covers or Bible XTremes. There was only the king’s English, and we liked it that way. Message, who doth commissioned you? Was it a President or Prime Minister?
MSG: Uhh, a guy name Eugene. He’s from Montana, I think. Wears Birkenstocks. Totes awesome dude.
Scofield Reference Bible (SRB): Guys, I know that, technically, I’m not a translation, so I really appreciate you letting me be here. Gosh, it’s so exciting to be here with all of you. I don’t often get the chance to speak. I’ve prepared a detailed presentation I’d like to share with all of you.
ESV [muttering]: Oh boy. Here we go.
SRB: Anyway, I’ve got a lot of really neat charts and tables that I’d like to show you guys. I think that by the time this dinner is over, we can predict the return of Christ to within 24 hours.
NIV: Look, not to be a jerk, but I think all of us contain a verse in which Jesus says we can’t know the time or the hour.
ESV [snickering]: Are you sure you still have that verse?
NIV: Oh, is that how it’s going to be? Don’t even get me started. Old Man James over there has more errors than Derek Jeter, and The Message is practically having a rave. Then there’s Amp, who can’t stop talking, and Mr. Scofield who has managed to connect Israel, Michael Gorbachev, and Michael W. Smith. I’m the only sane one of the bunch!
AMP: I think you’re overreacting, being hyperbolic, exaggerating. Yes perhaps I do speak, pontificate, ramble on a bit, but it’s all for good. I think if you would just let me speak, talk, hold forth a bit more, you would see that I have wonderful, extravagant, delightful ideas.
NIV: And ESV, don’t get me started on your whole family. You’re brother, Study Bible, has a serious weight problem. I mean, he needs to go on Atkins or something. Your grandma, Mrs. Heirloom, likes to wrap herself in calfskin. Calfskin! Does she sleep on a bed of veal? And your little sister, Glo Bible, looks like she’s ready to hit the rave scene.
ESV [standing up]: You stay away from my family! We’re working on our problems. At least I didn’t have a vasectomy!
MSG: Woah…this just got intense. [cracks open another Red Bull]. What’s a vasectomy?
NIV: How dare you?!? Let’s make this clear. I was neutered. There is a big difference. It’s kind of like being a eunuch, but different.
[Awkward silence]
SRB: So like I was saying, I have these really neat color-coded charts that clearly show how the fall of the Berlin Wall was predicted in…
KJV: Oh just shut up, dear boy. Thou rants and rants when thou knowest nothing! I long for the good old days when a man protected his family with both the broadsword and the Bible.
SRB: Well then. I’ll be leaving.
Catholic Edition Revised Standard Version (CRSV): Guys, I know I haven’t said anything yet, but I really think I can solve this problem.
ESV: No, no. I know how you work. You think that because you have extra books, that somehow makes you special. Well it doesn’t!
MSG: Dudes! Dudes. It’s in these times that I like to quote that verse in Proverbs which says, “Can’t we all just get along?”

Reformed Baptist Paradise

REFORMED BAPTIST PARADISE
—————————————-———-
As I go through my life with its toil and pain
I look in God’s word and realize it was ordained
All is predestined for a Baptist like me
As John Calvin taught in his theology

Last week I wrecked my car and I broke my arm
My kitty cat drank antifreeze and bought the farm
But since it’s all loving providence to me
I can hardly wait for the next catastrophe

Yes, I look to the book; I’m into Puritans
I can even quote from Owen’s work on indewelling sin
When I finish my devotions and you finish thine
Then we’ll do a study on the 1689
—————————————-———-
Been spending most our lives in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
We read Spurgeon day and night in Reformed Baptist Paradise
The best authors all have died in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
Scofield Bibles are despised in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
—————————————-———-
The preacher called me gluttonous and fat today
He told me to repent and choose the narrow way
I really don’t mind; in fact I’m very glad
‘cuz the sermons no good unless it makes me feel bad

I don’t flog myself even when I deserve it
A Baptist doing penance? You know that’s unheard of
We homeschool our children ‘cuz the public school stinks
Then the kids go to college and their moms to the shrink, bro’

If you come to church, you won’t believe your ears
We’re singing hymns that no-one’s heard in 300 years.
There’s no rock-and-roll, but please don’t think we’re queer
We’re just full of reverence and fear
—————————————-———-
No drama, choirs, no puppet shows,
not a single special song
Just expository preaching
two or three hours long

We’ve been spending most our lives in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
The pope would have to get baptized in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
To speak in tongues would be unwise in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
Janet Jackson would be shy in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
—————————————-———-
Courted me a wife; she soon became a mother
Baby born on Monday; 9 months we’ll have another
You think you’re really wicked? You got an evil heart?
Well I know I’m a million times as wretched as thou art

I’m the family leader and the children best obey
While my wife slaves away so we can rest on the Sabbath day
So don’t be crude, and don’t be rotten
‘cuz Pastor Martin says I’ll have to show my love upon your bottom
—————————————-———-
Been spending most our lives in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
The nursery is super-sized in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
[inaudible] are nice in a Reformed Baptist Paradise
Backsliders think it bites in a Reformed Baptist Paradise

Video of the Week: How to Write a Worship Song (In 5 Minutes or Less)

This is made all the more humorous by the fact that it is so true.  Makes me glad to go to a church that sings psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with little accompaniment to (mostly) old tunes.

You might be a confessional evangelical if....

This is kind of late (It would have been a good post for 10/31), but when I was doing some catch up blog reading yesterday I ran across this post from D. Hart in which he borrowed this from Russell Moore:

An evangelical is a fundamentalist whose kids dress up for Halloween.

A conservative evangelical is a fundamentalist whose kids dress up for the church’s “Fall Festival.”

A confessional evangelical is a fundamentalist whose kids dress up as Zwingli and Bucer for “Reformation Day.”

A revivalist evangelical is a fundamentalist whose kids dress up as demons and angels for the church’s Judgment House community evangelism outreach.

An Emerging Church evangelical is a fundamentalist who has no kids, but who dresses up for Halloween anyway.

A fundamentalist is a fundamentalist whose kids hand out gospel tracts to all those mentioned above.

Hart adds this dig at Calvinistic Baptists:

A confessional evangelical is one who dresses like Zwingli and Bucer but once he sees a baptismal font takes off his clothes to expose a Charles Spurgeon costume (minus the cigar).

The iBible

Hmmm, I wonder if they have this in the ESV yet....

(Note:  I could do without the "bleeped" part in the opening.  Best line:  "...allowing you to share your verses with friends and ministers....")
