Benjamin Beddome (1717-1795) Hymn: Father of Mercies, Bow Thine Ear

Note: From X post:

Make old hymns great again! We enjoyed singing this hymn by Particular Baptist Pastor Benjamin Beddome (1717-1795) in our Elder ordination service last Sunday (to the HAMBURG tune, "When I Survey"):

Father of mercies, bow Thine ear, Attentive to our earnest prayer; We plead for those who plead for Thee; Successful pleaders may they be. Clothe Thou with energy divine Their words, and let those words be Thine; To them Thy sacred truth reveal, Suppress their fear, inflame their zeal. Teach them aright to sow the seed: Teach them thy chosen flock to feed; Teach them immortal souls to gain, Nor let them labor, Lord, in vain. Let thronging multitudes around Hear from their lips the joyful sound, In humble strains Thy grace adore, And feel Thy new-creating power.

Song Text: 1 Corinthians 15:3-10

Image: Roses, May 2022, North Garden, Virginia

At midweek Bible Study tonight at CRBC, we looked at 1 Corinthians 15:3-10. We then sang this rendering of the text to the ST. ANNE tune. I wrote the song text back in 2020, but tonight was the first time it was sung congregationally.

1 Corinthians 15:3-10

That which I have received from Christ,

I have delivered thee:

How that Christ died for all our sin,

As Scripture says to be.

That he was buried and rose up

The third day, death o’er whelmed,

So Scripture says, and then appeared,

To Cephas and the twelve.

Five hundred men then saw the Lord,

At the same time alive,

And most of these remain in life,

Though some no more abide.

He, after this, was seen of James,

Then all the holy band,

And last of all was seen by me,

As one born out of hand.

For least of all I am of his,

Since his own church I tried,

But by his grace, I was set free.

His death was on my side.

And so with all, I labored hard,

Yet not by mine own hand.

I worked with zeal above the rest,

By grace alone to stand.

I am, by grace, the man I am.

His grace was not in vain.

That I could labor with the rest,

‘Twas him not me is plain.

Song of the Week: "There is a Meetin' Here Tonight"

I heard this song performed by Cantus on "Prairie Home Companion" Saturday evening, and it has been stuck in my head ever since.  Something to hum on my way to prayer meeting this Wednesday.  Enjoy!

Song of the Week: "Arise, My Soul, Arise" at Banner of Truth

I am looking forward to attending the Banner of Truth Ministers' Conference at Messiah College in Grantham, PA next week. The conference features stirring sermons, books, and conversation. The singing of psalms and hymns in the chapel with a couple hundred gospel ministers and elders is also encouraging. Here's the singing of "Arise, My Soul, Arise" at last year's conference. If you look hard you might see me and Howard A. on the far left side.

Song of the Week: Psalm 98

It looks like some families got together on a Sabbath afternoon to sing praise to God. Enjoy!

Song of the Week: Psalm 103:1-11

This is a great version of Psalm 103:1-11. JPBCers will likely sing it as one of our upcoming "Psalms of the month."
